Interview: Celine Chan of My Cozy Room Spa

I was first introduced to the owner/ spa manager of My Cozy Room Boutique Spa during the media event for Summer’s Eve recent “Say Yes to Sexy” campaign in Singapore, which featured yours truly in its new website and commercial. I was honestly surprised de très petite taille Celine Chan with the sweet angelic face was actually older than me when I’d initially pegged the energetic, bubbly Singaporean to be in her late twenties!

Chatting with Chan, I found out that she was also a Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate like me, but from its School of Business Studies. Doing what she chose to do came naturally to the business-owner because this was already her keen interest to begin with. Having spent years as a magician, I’d like to think I’m pretty good at reading people accurately and I really liked the big hearted woman standing before me, whose flawless complexion made her worthy of being ambassador of her boutique spa.

Balancing wisdom and compassion like how the Buddha taught, Chan is a peace-loving Mahayana Buddhist who stems from a rare breed of well-meaning entrepreneurs who honestly care about people and are passionate about what they do; a precious quality of humanity that I certainly respect and admire because it’s not just about inexorably chasing profits.

Starting her spa business in 2010 in a cozy part of town, one glaring difference between how Chan personally runs her ship compared to other spa owners, is the fact that she makes it a point not to push or hard sell packages and add ons to clients. We all know how disingenuously annoying that can be and Chan had experienced that same aggravating insincerity too when she went for regular facials at other spas before starting her boutique spa, which made her decide it was definitely something she would not practise.

Every customer gets a personal skin analysis before their spa/ facial treatment, with a friendly professional therapist suggesting what would help your complexion afterwards. I totally blissed out when doing their HYDRO JetPeel Facial Treatment, which was very effective. About 120 minutes long, it uses the latest stem cell technology and I did find my skin looking brighter and more energised after just one session. If like me you have perpetual baggies under your eyes, you’d find their revitalising crystal eye massage super shiok too.

Now, if you’re thinking of throwing a bridal spa party or considering a couple’s massage (I really enjoyed their hot stones pampering session!), doing it at Chan’s multi-award winning spa is a good idea. Her Edwardian parlour deco with art nouveau furniture reminds of modern Japanese Lolita culture, plenty of pretty lacy and European refinement and they provide free parking too.

A firm believer in the constant upgrading of skills for self-improvement, Chan regularly makes trips overseas to curate the latest and greatest so she can share the best with her clients and friends. Check out my fun “Scribble Project” interview with the gracious Celine Chan of My Cozy Room Boutique Spa below…
