Review: Grandpa’s Spirit Bottle by Ralf Rudolph (Fairmagic)

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: Maarten Bosmans”][vc_column_text]Today’s review is an effect from German magician Ralf Rudolph and its called Grandpa’s Spirit Bottle. The magician shows 5 cards on a table and to his side there is a spirit bottle. He tells the story about his grandpa; he was a magician and a smoker.

We see inside the spirit bottle: a full deck, a cigarette and a pack of matches. The magician has inherits this bottle from his grandpa and does not know how these cards were put inside this bottle. The magician then picks a spectator to come on stage and the spectator can choose any of the 5 playing cards yet the magician easily predicts that the spectator would choose that selected playing card.

The basic concept of this routine is good; you predict which item the spectator would choose. I think you can do a lot with this routine, if I should choose to perform it. Personally, I would not use 5 playing cards but 5 items that would make it more personal and I would not use the “late grandfather” approach, I would fake a name of a magician who was my mentor and he told me that you can give the bottle away to someone special in the audience. In this way, you have everybody involved.

You can talk about all of these intriguing items that a magician uses and create a more interesting hook in my humble opinion. For example: a magic wand, a ring, some money dollar bills, photograph where something is torn off, etc. Also, I like the idea of a free choice but yet you predict the spectator’s chosen object.

In this marketed effect there can be a revelation of a playing card but that is not too good in because you are required to damage the bottle to show your “proof”. Logically, I do not suspect anyone would ever do this to a treasured gift that is from their late grandfather.

What will you learn in this download? You will learn how to make an “impossible bottle” yourself and this is really priceless material that is great to use in your show since people will have no idea how this item got inside a regular glass bottle.

Ralf is a great teacher he explains everything nice and easy so you can start making your own impossible bottle immediately with stuff you have in your house. If you ever painted your house or apartment, you will defiantly have the things to get you going. You will also learn an interesting way to put a playing card in another everyday object. I believe even Derren Brown has a routine where the card is in that object. So overall this is a really nice way of learning how this is done.

You should definitely buy this if you want to do something in your show that is a bit different than most magicians. The work you need to put into creating a bottle is done quite fast… you could easily doing watching your favorite show on TV and be ready before the first break arrives.

At just $25 dollars, Grandpa’s Spirit Bottle is a really interesting effect which you should definitely get. This gets a 9/10 for me, if only the routine were a bit better.
