Review: Mental Pen by João Miranda and Gustavo Sereno

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: Michael Siegel”][vc_column_text]Mental Pen is the latest mentalism creation by Joao Miranda. For those who are overly excited about using a gimmicked pen for mentalism (you know who you are), sorry to disappoint, but despite the name of the product, it does not use a pen. Mental Pen uses a sharpie marker. But worry not you closet pen devotees, the gimmicked sharpie is superb and allows the performer to perform countless mentalism routines. After using this amazing sharpie, you will be converted into being a sharpie enthusiast.

Mental Pen does come with a sharpie marker, which is ungimmicked, well at least, the main body of the marker. That is a good thing. It does, however, come with three cleverly designed and extremely difficult to make gimmicks that can transform a regular sharpie into a super mentalism device. When the sharpie needs to be replaced, you just buy another regular sharpie. The cap is also special in that it helps to make a gimmicked sharpie into a regular, examinable sharpie. The beauty of this design is that the spectator herself unknowingly changes the gimmicked sharpie into an ungimmicked sharpie. I like the fact that you do not have to purchase any refills. You just buy another sharpie. I also like that you get three special gimmicks in case you accidentally lose one, but you really should not as the cap is designed to effectively store and keep safe the special gimmick.

What can this unique and cleverly disguised mental marvel do? Well, the online approximately 40 instructions teach 5 terrific routines. Before going into the routines, Joao Miranda instructs you how to set up the gimmick. The initial set up takes but a few seconds. After each use the performer will need to re-set the gimmick. The package does come with a specially made resetting tool. You can quickly reset the gimmick while you are walking to another table if you are doing table hopping or you can do it casually and quickly before performing for another group of people. Joao also shows you how to tweak a new sharpie to make the gimmick work properly. This tweaking, if necessary, would only take a few seconds.

Joao performs and explains 5 different routines. The first routine is when one participant shuffles half a pack of playing cards. The participant takes the sharpie and marks the face of the card with an X that is on the bottom of the deck sight unseen. The second participant then choses a card from the other half of the deck and openly marks an X on the back of the card using the same sharpie. An envelope that has been on display the entire time is opened and two cards are removed. One card has an X drawn on the face of the card and the other card has an X drawn on the back of the card. These two cards match perfectly the cards that the participants selected and marked with an X.

The second effect is when a participant freely choses and marks an X with a sharpie any word from a torn newspaper. That piece of newspaper is then signed by the participant using the same marker. The performer opens an envelope and the performer predicted the exact word chosen by the participant.

The third effect is when the performer correctly predicts a location randomly and freely chosen with a sharpie by a participant on maps printed on post cards. The pdf of the maps is provided on the online instructions.

The fourth effect is where the participant is shown a drawn figure of a voodoo doll and freely marks it in several places. The performer than reveals he is wearing a tee shirt with a design of a voodoo doll with permanent markings in the exact same places where the participant freely chose. This routine and the reveal is super cool. You can also download the design of the voodoo doll to make up your own shirt. If you do not want to use a shirt, you can of course just have the prediction in an envelope. This is my favorite routine provided.

The fifth routine is where the performer predicts a word that the spectator creates from randomly circled letters.

While Joao provides 5 terrific routines, you can easily come up with unlimited additional routines that fit your style and personality.

This is a fabulous utility device. While you can perform these effects without this particular gimmicked sharpie, Mental Pen allows for a much cleaner and convincing mentalism effect without the need for any switches or extra pocket space. Mental Pen is truly ingenious, creative, and unique. Start leaving your pens in the drawers at home and start using Mental Sharpie….. I mean Mental Pen. $39.95. Highly recommended. 10 out of 10 lucky charms.
