Review: Senti-Mentalism by Luca Volpe

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: Nique Tan”][vc_column_text]If you are into the mentalism scene, Luca Volpe should already be a name you know. Luca has released several books and DVDs in recent years and I have enjoyed going through and learning his material. His work on the chair test has also influenced my own routine (which he has also kindly reviewed in the past); I do enjoy his approach to mentalism.

This DVD is one of those that I wish I did not have to review. The material presented here is my kind of material – simple in execution, low tech, but completely fooling for a layperson.

Billets, pencils, pendulums, and revealing information – I really dig it.

I am sure that magicians watching will not be too impressed, but having done similar routines for laypeople myself, who have a modicum of belief in your special abilities, I can attest to their strength.

These routines are intimate pieces of theatre, and if done at the right time for the right person, will mystify and amaze on a deep level. I say “right” time and person, as the routines themselves are not snappy and will take some time to deliver and to present properly. If you are faced with a spectator with the “okay-quick-just-get-on-with-it” type of attitude to your performance, do not waste these routines on them. You will not impress them.

As such, due to the nature of the material, whilst strong, I would not do them for mingling close up engagements as they might take a little long for the payoffs to occur. I am sure you understand that for most professional gigs you need to hit them with visual bits of business and move fast to cover as many groups as possible. The routines here involve mainly one spectator with little else for those watching to participate in.

Some of my favourites include “Unlock Your Dream”, a 7 Keys to Baldplate type of routine incorporating the reveal of a spectator’s dream, as well as “Key to Your Mind”, a routine involving the use of a pendulum and a Haunted Key (which I feel I need to purchase soon). Luca’s other ideas in his “PIN Number Revelation”, as well as “The Mind Journey” are also worth studying, the latter being his approach to the classic Mental Epic type of routine.

I have several of Luca’s releases, and this one is a nice addition to the mix. I do need to say however, that in order to perform these types of routines effectively, you really need to commit to the material.

As in, REALLY commit and PERFORM them.

You need to believe what you are apparently doing, perform with a mysterious air, believe that what you are doing is truly special and not trivial, and perform in a caring and affective manner. And when you find yourself in the right setting performing this genre of mentalism for the right person, I can guarantee you that the feeling will be hard to beat.
