Review: Standing Up On Stage – Volume 5 – The Ovation by Scott Alexander

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: John Teo”][vc_column_text]This is the fifth and final volume of a set of DVDs which are like an encyclopedia on stage and parlour magic. In each volume, Scott Alexander concentrates on a different aspect of stage/parlour magic.

In addition to the actual effects he uses, he also discusses how to build the persona of the performing magician in “Character Building”, and how to work and collaborate with the stage hands and technicians in “Director’s Guide”.

The effects may be familiar to you, but when Scott puts his character and presentation on them, they become so different and so much more entertaining.

Introduction

Volume 5 features “The Ovation”. Scott shows you how to close your show using 2 variations of the Rule Of 3, and the possibility of adding a Kicker. He also shows how to put together the different segments of your effects to form a complete act, with smooth transitions inbetween segments. He teaches how to overcome stage fright.

The Effects

  1. Human Sewing Machine – his own version of needles in mouth using an assistant equiped with an inspection penlight.
  2. Toxic ACAAN Squared – an interesting combination of magic square and ACAAN.
  3. Stars – Dan Harlan’s Starcle gets an emotional treatment when combined with snowstorm, using a LED UV flashlight.
  4. Hydro-Tastic Glass – a beautiful and meaningful presentation of hydrostatic glass using tulle.

Character Building

Scott stresses the importance of scripting your act, which will also instill confidence and creativity in you.

Director’s Guide

In this final volume, Scott shows you how to wrap up your show and get applause as well as standing ovation by considering reintroduction, fake endings, call backs and running gags, using the pushforward gesture and show of humidity. A post-mortem to evaluate your show is important for the persuit of excellence.

Very good advice from someonw who is experienced and knows what stage and parlour magic is all about. Excellent when viewed with the other 4 volumes. A must if you wish to perform professionally on stage.
