Review: Guaranteed Jackpot by Mark Elsdon

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: John Teo”][vc_column_text]People play lottery because it is one of the quickest ways to win millions of dollars.  However, the chance of winning the top prize is very high.  In the UK, it is about 14,000 to 1.  But then there are numerous consolation prizes so that people can get back their investments or even make some decent profits while striving for the top prize.

If you have a method that can beat the lottery system and guarantees you the top prize, it would make a wonderful magic trick.  Mark Elsdon has come up with such an effect.

In “Guaranteed Jackpot”, a deck of number cards is used.  It comprises all the numbers from 1 to “60”.  It signifies the lottery balls from “1” to “60”.  A spectator shuffles this deck so that the numbers are mixed up.  This represents the balls in the lottery machine being mixed up.

The performer then deals the cards face downwards onto the table.  Another spectator calls “stop” at any time.  The remainder of the deck is put away out of play.  The performer picks up the dealt pile from the table and deals the cards into 6 piles.  The top card of each pile is then placed on the table, and the rest of the cards are again put away out of play.  These 6 cards represent the 6 lottery balls being funneled through the lottery machine.  At this point the audience agrees these 6 cards are arrived in a random manner.

The performer displays his “Lucky Lottery Ticket Holder”.  Inside the holder is his lottery ticket with 6 numbers.  As each card on the table is turned over, it matches each of the 6 numbers in the performer’s lottery ticket.  The performer’s ticket wins the top prize!  The “winning” lottery ticket can be given to the spectator for the next draw.  The ticket holder and the 6 cards on the table can be fully examined.

You receive the following items:

  • A deck of number cards
  • The lottery ticket holder
  • A couple of gimmicks

The instructions are available from a video in the internet.  You will be given the password.

You need to do something to the cards and the lottery holder.  This is no problem at all.  Even if you have 10 thumbs, you can do it within one minute!  All you need are adhesive tape and the video instructions.

There is nothing new in terms of method.  What Mark Elsdon did was to come out with a presentation involving predicting a winning lottery.  Anything to do with money and gambling will generate great interest in the audience.

Everything appears fair.  The deck of number cards is genuinely mixed up by a spectator.  The number of cards dealt is determined by a spectator.  The performer seems to have no control at all on the number cards.

In the end, nothing left on the table appears to be suspicious.  The lottery ticket is genuine and can be given out at the end of the performance to the spectator who assisted the performer.  If she does win the lottery later on, the performer will be hailed as “God”!

The effect can be performed close-up or on stage.  As mentioned by Mark in the video, for the stage version, 6 spectators can be called up on stage to display each of the 6 selected cards.

The effect is easy to do – there is no sleight of hand – and resetting is easily carried out.

In the video, Mark Elsdon uses a lottery holder that has the wordings “My Lucky Lottery Ticket Holder” printed on it.  The one you receive has no wordings at all.  Mark does not make any mention of this.  This is easily achieved by printing your own label and sticking it on the holder.

Mark uses the Piatnik number deck.  The deck you are provided is not the Piatnik deck.  It is called an upgraded number deck because it is also marked on its back.  At a later stage, a pdf instruction for the use of this deck will be made available at a special price to owners of Guaranteed Jackpot.

In Singapore where I reside, our lottery system that is best suited for this effect is Toto.  We choose 6 out of 49 numbers.  The number deck has 52 cards, and we need to use only 49 cards.  With a little thinking, this effect can also be adapted for use with our Singapore Sweep ticket which has 7 numbers.  In this case, the 7 numbers (digits) are fixed in a sequence.  The lottery holder provided fits the Singapore lottery tickets.

I feel the price is a little on the high side because what you receive are a standard number deck and the lottery holder – they are not custom manufactured specially for this effect.  However, such a number deck is no longer readily available, including the Piatnik number deck.  You are provided with a marked number deck instead.  This additional property of the number cards opens up new presentation possibilities. Properly performed, Guaranteed Jackpot has a huge impact on the audience.
