Review: At The Table Live Lecture – Joshua Jay 2016

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: Maarten Bosmans”][vc_column_text]Joshua Jay is an American Magician and also co-owner with his best friend Andi Gladwin of Vanashing Inc magic store. In this Lecture he is joined with his best friend and talks about allot of interesting experiences he had with his magic in travel and his Fool Us appearance fooling (spoiler alert!)  Penn and Teller .

The lecture starts of interesting Joshua teases us with a memorized deck lecture, he said he wanted to give an entire lecture on memorized deck. But he decides to give a lecture with traditional card tricks some memorized deck work and a coin effect. I was bummed about the tease, but in the end it was the right decision. After seeing what Joshua does with his memorized deck in this lecture I really want to see a DVD or a book with his effects and idea’s.

The lecture starts of with an effect called Signs a chosen and unseen card is hidden by a spectator using 3 cards from the deck the spectators shuffles Joshua is correctly able to identify the selected card of the spectator. After this trick Joshua first challenges us to find the method, I was pretty close and asks us why the method is not the most important part of it. He tells us to think of the effect as a truly test condition effect and this is more important than using a simple method. I love how Joshua challenges us as a viewer  to look at the magic effect to make it truly impossible.

He then does 2 effects with a memorized deck the effect double thought and weighing across, the reason I need to learn the Tamariz stack is the effect weighing across this effect is worth the price of the lecture. This is a cross with a ‘weight geuss’ effect (how many cards) and a cards across effect. It is such beautiful plotted effect and would kill in a close-up environment or on stage I absolutely love this. I need to learn tamariz stack after this review. Joshua also talks about how to learn a memorized deck.

He then explains the method behind his out of sight effect, he fooled not only Penn and Teller but also allot of magicians in Belgium with this effect. I remember seeing him doing this trick before the lecture starts in the summer 2 years ago and all the magicians that saw this effect could only talk about this effect after the lecture. I own out of sight and do it all the time and love it.

He then does 2 more effects with cards which are very interesting ‘in the hands of Christ ‘ and ‘Face change’ both are interesting effects which I am personally not going to use to much focus on the lovely weighing across right now but I loved the explanation of these because Joshua always explains why he created this effect for which environment. It is interesting to keep this perspective always in mind when creating new effects.

His last effect explained are some updates of the triad coins which is a lovely effect and very beautiful presented. I own the Triad coins and love these things. He ends with an effect not explained and is a truly beautiful effect talking about his pen pal magician who is in Jail and doing an effect of his. I really love this and was happy and bummed at the same time this was not explained.

I give this lecture a 9,5 out of 10. I learned interesting things and found Joshua a great lecturer.

BONUS INTERVIEW WITH JOSHUA JAY

What are tips you can give on scripting magic?

My biggest tip is to CONSTANTLY try to edit down the script so you are ONLY saying essential words or interesting words. There is no room for ANYTHING extra in great magic.

What are your favorite magic effects?

When people ask me for my favorite effect, the answer is always the same, and at the same time always different. My favorite trick is the one I’m working on. I think that’s important because you have to have passion to drive you to make what you’re developing the best it can be.

What are you working on next?

I am hard at work on my parlor show at the moment. I’m writing this to you in Tahiti, where I’m performing my parlor act every day on a cruise ship. I’m hoping to expand this 30 minute show to a full hour show in the next year or two.
