Review: Smooth Prediction by The Other Brothers

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: John Teo”][vc_column_text]Smooth Prediction is a gimmicked deck of cards that allows someone to freely choose a card and a written prediction of that card can be produced from elsewhere.

This is essentially a card to impossible location deck, except that you do not make the selected vanish to appear elsewhere.  The selected card stays in full view while a written prediction is taken from elsewhere.

This deck is based on the principle of another classic gimmicked deck.  The Other Brothers (Daryl Davis and Daryl Williams) added in another form of gimmickry and you have the Smooth Prediction Deck.

You receive the Smooth Prediction deck and a password to access an instructional video.  You need to do one other thing (explained in the video) before you can use the deck.  What you need to do is easily accomplished and depends only on how you want your written prediction to look like.

The basic routine, taught by The Other Brothers, is as follows.  Two spectators stand on either side of the performer.  The performer spreads a deck of cards face upward to show that the cards are in a random order.  One spectator makes a conscious choice by naming any card she sees.  This card is given to her.  The deck is then turned face downwards and the other spectator is asked to make an unconscious choice by cutting the deck at any point.  The card cut to is taken out and shown.  The lady who makes the conscious choice reaches into the performer’s trouser pocket nearer to her and takes out a prediction which states correctly the card she chose.  The other spectator similarly plunges his hand into the performer’s other trouser pocket and takes out a prediction that again states correctly the card he cuts to at random.  The effect is straightforward and clean.  The 2 cards are not forced.  This is all made possible by the Smooth Prediction Deck.  I believe that is how the “Smooth Prediction” gets its name.

Here are some points you need to note:

  • You need to be able to crop and palm cards.  Do not let that scare you.  The Other Brothers show you howt there are ample distractions to enable you to do that.  With proper audience management, you can do that almost half surrounded by spectators, except none of them should be behind you.
  • Your prediction is written on blank faced playing cards.  If you do not like this, simply do not turn around to show the back of the prediction card.  The audience assumes you use blank cards (on both sides) to write you prediction.
  • If you do not wish to perform this with 2 spectators, or do not like the spectator to reach inside your trouser pockets, you can perform this effect one-on-one with only one spectator.  She chooses a card, and you reveal your prediction elsewhere.  You are taught how to make the prediction appear inside a wallet (ungimmicked), an envelope, a card case, or even under a spectator’s shoe!

It is in the basic routine with 2 spectators that this special deck is best utilized.
