Review: T.U.R.N. by Jason Palter

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: John Teo”][vc_column_text]Annemann’s lock and keys effect with the unusual name of “7 Keys To Baldpate” has become a classic in mental magic.  It has sparked off numerous psychic lock routines, including those using adjustable combination locks, and therefore without the need for keys.

Jason Palter’s T.U.R.N. is one of these psychic combination locks.  Other gimmicked combination locks available include the Grismer Lock, the Larry Lock and the Dream Lock.  But they all work on different principles.

In effect, the performer displays a 4-digit adjustable combination lock.  He takes off the end cap and openly sets to a 4-digit number that he only knows.  He then unscramble the 4 digits.

The lock is handed to a spectator who tries numerous number combinations but fails to open the lock.  She asks 4 members of the audience to each call out a random number.  She inputs these numbers on the lock dial.  To everyone’s surprise, the lock opens on this randomly formed number!  T.U.R.N. stands for The Ultimate Random Number.

This is the basic routine.  You receive a chromed Master combination lock in a nice velvet pouch, and an instructional DVD.  The Master lock is specially gimmicked.  The working of the lock is completely mechanical and does not rely on electronics, magnets or gravity switches.  The lock truly opens on any 4-digit number.

In the DVD there is also a pdf booklet containing 13 different routines.  It is an important add-on to the lock.  It provides all sorts of ideas to use with T.U.R.N.  You can use time, memorable dates, ping pong balls, golf balls, or even an iPhone app in conjunction with the gimmicked combination lock.  There is a routine using 4 T.U.R.N. locks and 4 spectators that looks interesting.  Jason Palter promises that if you need to purchase 3 more locks to use in this routine, he will give you a special deal.

The routine I like most is the one that parallels the “7 keys to Baldpate” version.  It also uses Terry Nosek’s presentation that incorporates elements of suspense and comedy.

T.U.R.N. is easy to perform and has a powerful effect.  The combination lock looks sturdy and resets instantly.  It is small enough to carry in your pocket and is suitable for performing in walk-around, close-up and stage.

A worthy investment, and a lock that you will use in your performance.
