Review: Thought Wave Extreme by Gary Jones & Alakazam Magic

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Reviewer: John Teo”][vc_column_text]Brian Caswell has redefined mentalism with a deck of playing cards with his Cataclysm/Trilogy creations.

Here comes Gary Jones and Mark Bendell who give a commercial twist to this routine and come out with an interesting double mind reading effect with a deck of playing cards and psychological symbols.

In effect, a credit-card size card is shown to have a total of 52 different symbols – 26 are printed on one side of the card and the other 26 on the other side.  A spectator is asked to concentrate on one of these symbols.

The performer writes something on a small piece of paper, folds it so that the writing is hidden from sight and places it on the table.  He takes another piece of paper, writes something else on it, folds this up and also places it in full view with the first folded paper on the table.

The spectator writes her thought-of symbol (say, key) on the outside of the first piece of paper.  The performer mentally “sends” a playing card to the spectator.  She writes the thought she “receives” from the performer (say, 2 of hearts) on the outside of the second folded paper.

A deck of cards that has been on the table since the start of the performance is taken out of its case.  It is shown to have different symbols written on the back of each card.

The card with the “key” symbol on its back is taken out and placed next to folded paper no 1.  The 2 of hearts is also taken out and placed next to folded paper no 2.

The “key” card is turned over – it is the 7 of clubs.  This matches exactly with the prediction written on paper no 1.  The 2 of hearts is turned over – it has the symbol of a “moon”.  When paper no 2 is unfolded, it has the “moon” symbol written on it!

The performer has successfully predicted twice – the identity of the card with the selected symbol on its back, and the symbol on the back of the freely thought-of card!  The spectator has a free choice of any one of the 52 symbols as well as the playing card.  It is easy to do, requires no memory work or sleight-of-hand, and resets instantly.

You receive the special deck of cards that does all the work for you.  You are also supplied with the credit-card symbols card printed on both sides, and an instructional DVD.  You need to draw the symbols on the backs of the playing cards yourself.  Everything is explained by Peter Nardi in the well-produced DVD.

You will want to add this effect to your performing repertoire.
